Three's a crowd.

This article catch my early morning attention, 'Three's a crowd'. It about parents sharing bed with their children. For most Asian families, sharing their beds with their children is common. There are many positive experiences thet the child gain. For example their family bed helps the children and their parents feel closer together after a full day of separation. Infact there are many more good that parent and children share at bed time like story telling and etc...

But on the other hand, some find it can cause lack of parental privacy. So should parents of toddlers share the bed? The decision is personal and you know what is best for you.

I slept with my babies but there is good and bad issues related to sleeping with your children. It may cause a stress on the marital relationship as there is no one on one time for parents. There have been tragic accidents with parents rolling over on children. I had a child that had febrile seizures and needed constant monitoring. I would seldom sleep fully because I had to be alert to fevers. Parents need to bond with children, but with each other also. There needs to be a balance.

It is a personal choice. Most Asians like me have their babies with them until they are able to sleep on their own in their own room.

But again how many children have the luxury of having their own bedrooms?

Perhaps only 20 % of Asian families can make a choice. Others have no choice at all.

I know of one particular family where the in laws would not allow the son to move out and the couple shared only one room with their children until they leave town for further studies.

What is privacy in this context?

I am sharing my personal experience here as a parent. With my first born, there was no choice left for us because we were staying in our in laws house but when we decided to live separately, our children has their own bed though they share in one room.

Yes, sometimes it can cause some marital problems but it really depends on our personal perspective in rearing our child. Socioeconomic factors play an important role too. During the time that I was breastfeeding my first born, I learnt to sleep in one or two positions only. Before having a child, my mother used to complain that my bed is such a disaster because I can move anywhere I want , leaving the sheets with wrinkles

I think it is the individual 's choice. I have no babies but Spunky our dog has been in our bed many times. If I had a sick child I would let them come to bed with me. I think it is a personal choice although here not long ago, a mother rolled over on her baby and smothered it but she was also using drugs. She was prosecuted and her other kids taken away.

Here in Detroit, Michigan USA, it's not so common in third generation families, but more in first and second generation families. Although it's not widely known, Detroit is blessed with people from many different cultures and that is also a factor of whether parents still sleep with their children.

Interesting post and discussion!
